Most Popular Skincare in 2030?
I’ve got a skincare prediction for you: The most popular skincare product ingredient of 2030 will be…. PLANT-BASED ADAPTOGENS.
On Feb 1, 2024, the Journal of Clinical Dermatology released news on a 12 week study that evaluated the efficacy of a novel serum (MYS) comprised of a unique proprietary blend of plant-based adaptogens that demonstrated improvements in the appearance of erythema (redness), dullness, texture, pore size, uneven pigmentation, and overall skin quality. In only 12 weeks, the trial participants, which were represented by a variety of skin types and ethnicities, reported high levels of satisfaction with little to no adverse reactions. This is huge!
By Week 12, 96 percent of participants reported that their skin looked fabulous and even shared that their family and friends showered them with compliments and even wore less makeup!
Here’s some helpful skin smart information on plant-based adaptogens (PBA). PBA’s are botanical substances that are believed to help the body adapt to stress, both internally and externally. While adaptogens are often associated with oral consumption for their stress-reducing properties, they are also increasingly used in skincare for their potential benefits on the skin's stress response. Here's what we know about how plant-based adaptogens may benefit the skin's stress response:
Anti-inflammatory Properties: Many adaptogens contain compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, which can help calm and soothe the skin. By reducing inflammation, adaptogens may help mitigate the visible effects of stress on the skin, such as redness and irritation.
Antioxidant Activity: Adaptogens are rich in antioxidants, which help protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by environmental aggressors like pollution and UV radiation. By neutralizing free radicals, adaptogens may help prevent premature aging and maintain skin health.
Balancing Effects: Adaptogens are known for their ability to restore balance in the body, and this includes the skin. They may help regulate sebum production, hydration levels, and overall skin function, which can be disrupted by stress.
Enhanced Barrier Function: Stress can compromise the skin's natural barrier, leading to increased sensitivity and vulnerability to external irritants. Adaptogens may support the skin's barrier function, helping to strengthen and protect it against damage.
Calming and Soothing: Many adaptogens have calming and soothing properties that can help alleviate feelings of stress and tension in the skin. This can be particularly beneficial for those with sensitive or reactive skin prone to flare-ups during times of stress.
Boosted Resilience: Adaptogens are believed to enhance the body's resilience to stressors, including those that affect the skin. By supporting the skin's natural defense mechanisms, adaptogens may help it better withstand external stressors and maintain its healthy, youthful appearance.
It's important to note that while adaptogens show promise in skincare, more research is needed to fully understand their mechanisms of action and efficacy when applied topically. Additionally, individual responses to adaptogens may vary, so it's essential to patch-test products and monitor how your skin reacts.
